Egyptian FM and Burundian counterpart discuss bilateral relations and regional issues

Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukri met Tuesday with Burundian Minister of External Relations and International Cooperation Albert Shingiro.

CAIRO – September 7, 2020: Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukri held a meeting on Tuesday with Burundian Minister of External Relations and International Cooperation Albert Shingiro.

During the talks, the two sides discussed distinguished Egyptian-Burundian relations, as well as ways to strengthen them in different areas, as well as a range of regional and international issues of common interest.

Shoukri and Shingiro are expected to hold a joint press conference at the end of the talks.

Shoukry said that Egypt and Burundi are seeking to strengthen their cooperation, noting that the Egyptian private sector has focused on investing in Burundi in recent years, especially in construction and health care.

Meanwhile, Shingiro thanked the Egyptian government and people for inviting him to participate in the Egyptian International Cooperation Forum, scheduled for Wednesday.

Shingiro noted that his talks with Shoukry touched on a number of issues of common concern, praising the close ties between the two countries, citing President Abdel Fattah El Sisi’s recent visit to his country in March.

The senior Burundian diplomat announced the formation of joint committees to activate the agreements signed with Egypt, calling on Egyptian businessmen to invest and set up projects in his country.

In April 2021, the chiefs of staff of the Egyptian and Burundian armies signed a military protocol which provides for cooperation in the areas of training and joint exercise.

The Egyptian-Burundian cooperation protocol allows the two armies to exchange their expertise and reflects the consensus in the visions of the armies of the two countries on matters of mutual interest, said a statement by the spokesperson for the Egyptian army.

In March 2021, Burundian President Évariste Ndayishimiye traveled to Cairo for a three-day official visit to Egypt during which he met several senior politicians.
