SM returns, reviews ways to develop bilateral relations

Oman and Qatar affirm strong political will and determination of their leaders to improve all areas of cooperation

Muscat – His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik returned home on Tuesday after concluding a two-day state visit to Qatar, which responded to an invitation from Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani, Emir of Qatar.

During the visit, His Majesty the Sultan had a series of official talks with Sheikh Tamim. The two leaders discussed aspects of cooperation and ways to strengthen brotherly relations to achieve the aspirations of their peoples.

Oman and Qatar issued a joint statement saying that His Majesty the Sultan and the Emir of Qatar had in-depth talks which reviewed bilateral relations and ways to develop them in various fields. The two leaders also exchanged views on a number of regional and international issues. The talks showed that relations between Oman and Qatar are deeply rooted and their positions identical on regional and international issues. They reflected the emphasis placed by the two countries on the importance of dialogue in solving all the problems of the region.

Both sides affirmed the strong political will and the leadership’s determination to improve all areas of cooperation. This historic visit by His Majesty the Sultan will open up new prospects for consultation, coordination and cooperation between the two countries, the statement said.

His Majesty the Sultan and Sheikh Tamim praised the excellent ties between the two countries, including the great scope of cooperation and partnership. The two leaders reiterated their desire to promote cooperation in the field of clean energies and their willingness to exchange their expertise on the means to fight against climate change.

The two sides stressed that the tangible and diverse opportunities in the two countries provide a solid foundation for consolidating relations, expanding investment opportunities and establishing partnerships. In addition, they insisted on increasing and diversifying the volume of trade and strengthening the role of the private sector to achieve their common interests.

Several pacts were signed as part of the state visit, including a military cooperation agreement between the two governments, an agreement to avoid double taxation, an investment agreement, a cooperation agreement in investment in Oman Shipping Company, a cooperation agreement for investments in the hospitality sector and a memorandum of understanding in the field of labor and human resource development.

At the regional and international levels, the two sides agreed on the important role of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf in strengthening security and stability in the region. They also stressed the importance of consolidating consultation and coordination of positions at the bilateral level, as well as in regional and international arenas, with the primary aim of serving Arab, Islamic and legitimate humanitarian issues – to which is added the Palestinian cause – and the need to strengthen security and stability in the Middle East and the world at large.

At the end of the visit, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Emir of the State of Qatar expressed his deep gratitude to His Majesty the Sultan and his pride in this historic visit.

At the same time, His Majesty Sultan Haitham Bin Tarik expressed his deep thanks to Sheikh Tamim and his great appreciation for the hospitality extended to him and his delegation during the visit. His Majesty the Sultan invited Sheikh Tamim to visit Oman.
